When you use a search engine, you get all kinds of results back. Usually the best ones come up first, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes what you really needed to know is buried on the third of fourth page, but most people don’t search that far into the results. If they don’t find what they need on the first (or sometimes second) page, they’ll move on and try their search a different way – or use a different search engine because the results will be slightly different. It’s important on any search that you choose sites that have good content, so you can get the right information for you.
Websites come in all types, from the very professional and highly reputable to those that are very questionable and that you wouldn’t feel comfortable trusting. When you search, you’ll often get a mix of these kinds of sites, but you don’t have to worry too much about that. It’s usually pretty easy to find out which of these sites are good and which aren’t. Sites that belong to major companies and brand names, the government, and educational institutions are generally considered safe and believed to have good information.
Many sites with user-driven or user-created content have good information, too, but some of them don’t. Be more careful with these types of sites, and if you find information on them that you’re unsure of you might want to look for that same information on other sites so you can verify it. Then you’ll be sure that you’re being told something completely reputable and you don’t have to worry about using that information. It’s always a good idea to verify what you find on the Internet, since there are sites that seem to thrive on misinformation and they can cause you to make a a bad choice if you trust what they have to say.
